Questions about: Gender, Relationships and Ministry

Reggie: (10/09/00) Jack, I feel led into full-time overseas missions. I am not yet called to a specific people group, but I believe God is definitely leading me overseas. I went to China last summer and I fell in love with the ministry and I would love to go back, but I am not yet sure that's where God wants me for sure. I recently started dating an awesome woman of God who has a huge heart for missions. She really feels led into medical missions. I don't know if God wants to use me in the medical mission field. I pray for wisdom to discern if I should be dating a girl unless we both feel led to the same mission field right now. I am curious to how God could use me in the medical mission field. I am not a medical person. Any advice and suggestions?

Jack: Hi, Reggie:
Your question is a good one and deals with two issues:
  1. Your personal calling.
  2. How your calling relates to the person you marry.

I find it personally interesting since I had to face the very same questions when I was in college, when I fell in love with a woman who was called to be a missionary doctor! (I'll save that story for another time!)

I would encourage you both to go slow on the intensity of your relationship with your friend and do a lot of talking and praying about who you both are, what your gifts and calling are, and how this may relate in serving the Lord better should you decide to commit yourselves to each other. I would also suggest that you find a wise counselor who can give you both objectivity. It would also be helpful to review mission agencies or the means through which you could possibly serve in a cross-cultural context in the future.

There is much more to "medical missions" than the physicians and nurses. Hospitals need to be built, well organized, and administered. When ill people seek physical help, they are particularly open to friendship and spiritual counsel. Hospital chaplaincy is a specialized field that can be very fruitful.

You and your friend may well find that your interests, abilities, and gifts could complement one another. May the Lord guide you as you explore what He has created you both for - and whether your service may be strengthened by joining your lives together.

In His Grace,

Jack
