Questions about: How can I use my major & skills?
Michelle G: (05/18/00) I'm interested in Graphic Design, i.e. I want to do magazine stuff and posters, that kind of thing. Is there any place or any use for this on the field? I don't know where in particular.
Jack: Hi, Michelle. You asked about Graphic Design - "magazine stuff and posters, that kind of thing." Lots of mission agencies are looking for people like you! Let me think out loud with you for a few moments. As the Church is growing in Third World countries, there is interest in developing their own print media. Graphic designers exist, but what you have learned and are doing is undoubtedly quite a bit ahead of what is available overseas. You might be invited to form part of an editorial team and could help to do your thing and also teach eager young nationals who are eager and gifted but haven't had the opportunities you have had. All North American agencies have their own house organs which need people doing design for them. I think it would be a great experience to work for a year or two stateside with an agency you feel comfortable with, which would give you the opportunity to hone your skill, get to know the agency, and become more familiar with the places they work. They might even send you on a trip once in a while to get the local color and feel. At Urbana you would be able to talk with many agencies about their needs for a Graphic Artist, and also see what they do and how they project their work. Be prepared, however. Most will probably require you to raise your own financial support. However, this is an opportunity to confirm the Lord's call and also grow in faith in His power and provision. If I run into you at Urbana, share with me which agency has the most stunning graphic display! Bless you, Michelle. Jack
