Questions about: How can I use my major & skills?

Anonymous: (06/23/00)

Career or calling? I graduated college last year with the automatic and safe intent of finding a New York City corporate 9-5 job, and yet I always knew in my heart that I really didn't want that.

Now, one year later and feeling that time is passing me by, I know God is calling me to something much bigger than this. My heart's desire (which I am still scared to even admit) is to work in missions through music and worship. I play piano/keyboards and God has given me numerous opportunities to be in worship teams and bands over the past couple of years, and I am even currently leading a college and career Bible study worship team.

But when I really think and pray about where God wants me to be, my heart aches for the God-needing, God-hungry world.

So, not knowing where to start or who to ask to incorporate missions with that, I was led to this site by a friend. And now I am wondering where I could find some type of missions organization where they send out traveling worship teams, or even if a team is put together to go to a particular nation/state to minister. Any help, ideas, or organizations would be greatly appreciated.

It's all about Him.

Jack: Thanks for your question. Several phrases leaped out at me: "I know God is calling me...," "My heart's desire...(even though you are scared to admit it!), and "my heart aches...." Those are powerful statements, and are indicative to me that the Lord has His hand on you - a precious reality.

At this moment (I'm about 30,000 feet over Colorado right now), I can't put my hand on an agency or mission that is looking for a keyboard player who would like to be part of a traveling worship team. I'm sure there are some, and Urbana would be a unique place to find one! I don't know if you are planning to attend, but it would be a place to interact with the people out there who are looking for someone like you.

However, I'd like to make another suggestion. Just as the Lord pushed you out of your comfort zone (the corporate 9-5 job) once, I wouldn't be surprised if He is fully able to do it again!

In other words, instead of becoming a member of a traveling worship team (which doesn't have the opportunity of really getting into a cross-cultural context), how about taking your talents overseas, not only as a musician, but also as a trainer of worship leaders - leaders who can learn through you to avoid the temptation of being showmen/women and really lead people into the presence of God (like we trust the Urbana worship team will do)? I don't know what your professional training is, but you obviously have talent and experience.

Could you teach and model worship in a theolgical seminary? Bible school? Be a music director in a local congregation, incorporating national music rhythm and styles into the heart-worship of the people rather than just copying what they hear from American CD's? Urbana could help you explore this avenue as well.

In short, your question is a good one. I can't give you a snap answer just now, but I think that the Urbana experience will touch the above phrases I have drawn from your letter. Get back to me if you would like. Let's keep sharing.

May the Lord continue to nourish your heart hunger until you find your place in His perfect will for you.

Jack
