Questions about: How can I use my major & skills?

Philip: (09/16/00) I just started my freshman year at California Polytechnic State University, and have recently realized my own interest in overseas missions. I'm majoring in Mechanical Engineering but was wondering about its usefulness in missions. I'd hate to get a great degree from a great school, and then not be able to use it in missions. So I wanted to ask if there are many opportunities for mechanical engineers in missions these days. My other option would be Architectural Engineering, or, I guess if it were needed, I would consider Aeronautical, Civil, or another branch of engineering. So could you help me out in this way? I just feel so unguided, and very unsure.
Thanks much for all your help,
Philip

Jack: Hi, Philip:
Thanks for your note. I'm delighted that you are interested in overseas missions. One mission that is looking for both mechanical engineers as well as architects is Engineering Ministries International. They will also have an exhibit at Urbana, if you will be going to the convention.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that a first class university education is not just preparing one for a specific kind of work. It is the preparing of an individual, including the capacity to analyze and solve problems. I have known several missionary leaders who were trained civil engineers, for example, but as they moved through life were led into other aspects of ministry and part of their effectiveness was their technical preparation.

Among the over 300 exhibiters at Urbana you will undoubtedly find other mission agencies that are looking for people with a background like yours. From the speakers and possible seminars you will also hear about both the needs of the world and many opportunities to serve the Lord and the people that He loves.

May the Lord guide and bless you in your preparation and future decisions.

Jack
