Questions about: Parents

Liz: (03/20/01)

Hi Jack,

I went to urbana this past winter and it was the most "awesome jawsome" thing I've ever attended. My heart for missions longs even MORE to "go out" and do it! But my parents are very much against it.

The New York City Urban Project was something I was looking into and was praying about. My parents don't want me to go anywhere and come back "in a body bag."

It bothers me that they feel this way. They are ready and willing to support missionaries, but when it comes to their 21 year old daughter, they dont feel the same.

But I'm not giving up on working in the inner city. So, here's my question -- am i being stubborn in thinking that SOMEtimes even parents can be wrong about stuff?

Confused about this summer,
Liz

Jack:

Hi, Liz:

Thanks for sharing your "Urbana experience." It sounds like you have received something of God's heart for the world. May this longing continue to grow and expand.

My suggestion is that you research very carefully the New York City Urban Project, interview the leaders, and get all the information you can. Talk with them about your parents' concern and then share what you've researched with your parents.

Fear is often based on assumptions rather than facts. If they are still uncomfortable with this option, consider another less frightening one. If you still feel strongly about this urban project, pray that the Lord would change their attitude.

One day you may have to make a decision that will not meet with their approval. Meanwhile, give them an opportunity to grow in appreciation of your submissive attitude while coming to appreciate your capacity for handling yourself.

They have invested a lot of time, love, and resources in you so far. They know you better than anyone else and only want the best for you. All this merits respect. There is more than just being RIGHT and WRONG in this issue. (Be careful: one day you may be saying the same things they are telling you, to your own daughter!)

Blessings on you, Liz. May the Lord guide you step by step as you seek to serve Him. He is able to open the doors in amazing ways.

Jack

P.S. Note my answer to "Lauren" who had a similar issue.
