Questions about: Urbana

Rebecca: (09/18/01) Jack, Is the Urbana conference happening this year? I am in nursing school right now, and I want to go into missions, I want to be a midwife on the mission field. I specifically have a heart for India. I was looking at the question on the sight already about nursing schools with an emphasis on missions. That is something I have always wanted to find. Sorry this is kind of long, but I really do want an answer to this. I never really found that, and I am now in a nursing program at a Technical college. I just started clinicals, but would still consider changing schools because I would like to get my BSN eventually anyways. I was wondering what do you see as the advantages to actually having a nursing education from a Christian school that tends to direct it toward missions. This type of a program excites me, but I don't know how I would afford to go away to a school like that. Please give me any input you might have as well as if you think it may be better for me to just stay and finish where I am. In Christ, Rebecca

Jack:

Thanks, Rebecca, for your question and above all, for your desire to obey the Lord's call to mission.

  1. No, there will not be an Urbana Student Missionary Convention this year. It is tentatively planned to take place at the end of 2003, but the official decision has not yet been made. Watch the urbana.org website for details.
  2. Nursing schools. Since you are already enrolled and moving along at a school, my feeling would be to encourage you to continue on and finish there. Transferring is always a bit problematic and you mention the matter of financing.
  3. Training for missions. I would certainly encourage you to get Bible and cross-cultural training before serving in India.
However, you might receive helpful orientation through the agency or entity which will facilitate your placement in India. You are probably aware that it is now impossible to secure a visa to go to India as a "missionary". It would be important to explore what the Indian government requires for certification as a nurse there. It might even be good to have a short mission trip to India to explore on site where and how the Lord might lead you to serve him.
  4. Research. I would encourage you to read a lot about the situation in India, begin writing people who are working there, and most of all strengthen your ties with your local church and the missions committee.

May the Lord continue to guide you in your preparation.

Jack
