Questions about: Getting involved in missions

Carissa: (09/23/01) Jack,

I am sharing at my church soon about my experience this past summer in Calcutta, India. What do people want to know? Do I just tell them about my trip or do I tie-in some verses and a message with it? I want people to get a feel for the amazing experience I had and I want them to be motivated to love. Any ideas?

Jack: Hi, Carissa:

How wonderful you could have a mission experience in Calcutta. I visited there on my way to the States for College in 1952, and the time there made a deep impression on me. Let me think out loud about some suggestions for you in sharing your experience:

1) What do people want to know: excellent question. A lot depends on the group you are speaking to: a brief report Sunday morning at church; a 45 minute presentation to the young peoples' group or your IVCF Chapter; or sharing with the Rotary Club - which may include friendly, world interested people but not necessarily Christians. It would be good for you to ask leaders in the group you are going to speak to what they would be interested in hearing, and then listen very carefully, taking notes. I would guess that most would want to know what you saw, what contribution you made, and what impacted you.

2) Travelogue or sermon? Once again, it all depends on the group. Also, what it is that you want to accomplish. You have outlined this already: You want people to "get a feel" for the amazing experience; you want them to be motivated to love. To feel, they will need to see and live in their minds what you experienced. This happens through vivid descriptions and stories of real people. You can't say everything. Give a brief overview so that they get the context, then zero in on 1 or 2 of the experiences that most moved you. What moved you will move them.

Yes, I would use Scripture, especially if the Lord spoke to you through a specific passage in calling you there, while you were there, or since you have been home and are reflecting on your experience. The context will guide you as to the application - what you feel you are being guided to call the people to do, as their responsibility to love. Think of ways people can participate: whether it by an offering or an activity meeting material or spiritual need at home. The most powerful incentive to moving them to action is to report how your experience in India has changed your own response now that you are back.

Most of all, pray carefully before each presentation. Be descriptive but don't exaggerate. You may be able to make some in your audience weep, but only the Lord can really move their hearts to change and action.

Blessings on you, Carissa.

Jack
