| Questions about: How can I use my major & skills? |
| Emma: (05/28/02) Hi Jack, I am seeking God concerning my current direction and wondering if you could offer any insight. I am graduate student in agriculture (specifically I am breeding dry beans). I embarked on this course because I'll have the opportunity to do participatory field research overseas. My long term goal is to work overseas in agriculture development. I'm questioning the usefulness of staying in academia for three more years and getting a doctorate. How useful would this much education be in a mission related field?

Dear Emma:
Thank you for your question. I praise the Lord for your desire to serve Him in such a practical way. The answer to your question, it seems to me, would rest largely on the specific work you got into and the agency or organization you ended up working with. For example, it would be one thing to be a professor of biology in a foreign university, and through this means live and speak a witness for Jesus. In this context, a PhD would be important. On the other hand, if you would be working with a development agency, such as World Vision (www.worldvision.org) or World Concern (www.worldconcern.org) It would be important to discover what they are doing, what they might want you to do, and after a little experience, decide how the Lord is calling and using you and whether a doctorate would be important to fulfill this call. May the Lord guide you as you delve deeper both into His creation (beans) and into His will for your life. Jack |
