Questions about: Money and Missions

Kristi: (02/20/03) Dear Jack,

Hi! I will be graduating from a BEd program in May 2003. I am so excited about becoming a teacher. I know that God is leading me towards missions and I am very willing to go. Actually, I am quite eager to join the mission field. There is one difficulty however, I have a huge student loan load. Is it possible to serve on the mission field and on a part-time basis earn money to pay off my student loans?

Thanks!

Jack: Thanks, Kristi, for your question. I share your excitement about being a teacher, and am glad to hear that the Lord is leading you toward missions. The whole matter of a “huge student loan” is a critical problem to deal with.

I don’t think it is very practical to think of serving as a missionary and working part-time to pay off a loan. Most missionaries I know, especially as they are starting out – learning the language, getting into a foreign culture – are doing all they can to survive. Also, in most missionary situations foreigners either can’t earn money, or if they can, the pay rate is so small (in comparison to wages in the U.S.) that the project would hardly be worth it. Also, I doubt that any mission agency would approve of such a plan.

I have written to others who have asked me the same question. Perhaps my answers to them will be of help to you.

May the Lord surprise you with His generosity and creativity as you trust Him for His provision and grow in faith in the process.

In His Grace,

Jack
