| Questions about: How can I use my major & skills? |
| barb: (04/16/03) What is a missions photographer's job discription and how much do they make? |
| Jack: Barb, different mission agencies have different arrangements for securing
photographs. Some large missions have a full-time photographer to accompany
editors/reporters looking for stories . For example, the Southern
Baptist Missions Board, with over 4,000 missionaries and a budget of $270
million, have a full team of journalist/photographer/videographer on each
continent to supply their magazine and newspapers and press services. Other agencies hire a photographer for a short period of time to work on a project. Most agencies have a journalist/writer for promotional purposes. However, most agencies just depend on the photographs of their missionaires. I know - I took hundreds of photographs for our mission, many of which were published. I would guess that those agencies that do have full-time promotional personnel, including photographers, require them to raise support just like everyone else, and they would be on the same salary scale as any other missionary. If you would like more information, I would encourage you to write Ken MacHarg (kmacharg@lam.org). He has a long experience with mission journalism and runs a news service for the Latin America Mission. Hope this is helpful. Jack |
