| Questions about: Money and Missions |
| Nesha: (10/20/04) Hi Jack. I am a senior in college with a clear understanding of where God is calling me-to missions with children. My question for you is- how do surrender to God COMPLETELY withou worrying about finances and how I am going to "survive" in the countries that I know God is calling me to?

| Jack: Nesha, it appears to me that the Lord is calling you into a journey of faith. This journey has probably already begun. Has the Lord taken care of you up to now? If so, He can well take care of you to the end of the journey.
Remember how the disciples were sent out two by two on their first “mission trip?” They were told to take nothing extra with them and trust the Lord for food, shelter, contacts, and their message. This was a faith building experience, preparing them for their future ministry. As you read through the Book of Acts, you will see little reference to finances. No one seems to be “raising funds.” Paul asks for offerings, but only for the “saints in Jerusalem.” Perhaps the most extensive reflection on this subject is found in Philippians 4:10-20. Every verse says something about the missionary and money. (This would be a good Bible Study for you to think through!) You will probably find that the Lord will take you through different experiences, as we find Paul noting. Sometimes you will be amazed at how blessed you are with resources. Other times, things get a bit thin. But if you are in the Lord’s will, you will find that He meets your needs. Perhaps you would like to read the biography of George Muller. He kept an orphanage in England that grew to 4,000 children and trusted the Lord for his finances, never asking anyone for anything. It is a faith builder! I think surrender is part of the picture, but when you keep your eyes on the Lord, you will find He gives you joy on the journey. If you are struggling with an issue of obedience, the Lord will test you and push you until you let it go. This may be part of the picture of finding resources, but only you will be able to judge this. Survival in your country of service may come in many ways. If you go with a mission agency they will probably want to see evidence that people are supporting you now. When you go to a foreign country, they will want to see evidence that you have a source of support. You will need to work all this through. May the Lord guide you step by step. (Don’t forget the Bible Study on Philippians 4!) Jack |
