| Questions about: How can I use my major & skills? |
| katie: (10/24/04) Jack, I'd really like to work with orphans in a residence home setting. I was thinking of getting a college degree in elementary ed, but I really don't want to work in a classroom. My gifts are more one-on-one relationship building. I was wondering if a degree in psychology from a Christian University would be better than an ed degree. What do you think?

| Jack: Katie, both would be invaluable! Elementary ed will help you learn how to teach children: learn to gain their attention, how to communicate at their level, how to plan your presentations, etc. Psychology will help you understand the effects of the traumas they have experienced before they came to the orphanage and the cause of strange behavior they may have.
I would think that at Eastern your advisor could help you build a curriculum which would incorporate strategic elements from both disciplines. I wouldn’t be surprised if there wouldn’t be some overlapping anyhow. Perhaps “educational psychology” would be the way to go.
Are you in touch with an organization you plan to work with? I would ask them the same question. I would then take their answer and show it to your advisor. May the Lord – the best educator and psychologist that ever was – help you sort out these details. I would also encourage you to get some hands-on experience in an orphanage while you are a student. Blessings on you. Jack |
