| Questions about: How can I use my major & skills? |
| Jim: (01/20/05) Dear Jack,
I want to be a religious counselor,
could you tell me what training do I take, a diploma, a bachelors or what,
thanks.
Jim. |
| Jack: I’d love to be able to sit and dialogue with you about the kind of “religious counseling” you have in mind and in the light of your desires, explore options. To give adequate help to others it is helpful to have some quality biblical and theological training, as well as your own person relationship with Jesus and deepening life of prayer. Such training is available in Bible Institutes, Christian colleges, and seminaries. The task of a counselor is a complicated one requiring a thorough knowledge of psychology and counseling, as well as practical supervised experience with counselees and your own intimate relationship with God.
A possible path of preparation could be to study psychology and perhaps Bible in an undergraduate program in a Christian college, such as Wheaton, Gordon-Conwell, Moody, Trinity, etc.. Then, upon entering a graduate school you could seek a Master’s degree in counseling, while deepening your biblical and theological studies. If one desires to charge money for counseling services, most states require a certain number of hours of supervision to receive a license. Hope this is helpful! Jack |
