Questions about: Guidance

John.: (10/11/05) Hi, I thought i would ask you this question, I have been praying for certain personal reasons asking God for an answer, I asked him to repeat some sign to me twice, (but I'm not sure the sign was from God,) but when I prayed mant times again, the sign is not repeated, what do you think of this, please do reply soon within this week, thanking you, John.

Jack: John, be careful about the matter of signs. It is true that on one occasion the Lord encouraged King Ahaz to ask for a sign (see Isaiah 7:11) and Gideon asked the Lord for a sign (Judges 6:36ff) which the Lord in His mercy honored. The Jews placed great emphasis on signs, which Paul recognized (see 1 Cor 1:22 “the Jews demand … signs”) but didn’t support. Rather, he placed his emphasis on the clear teaching of the Gospel (“but we preach Christ crucified” 1 Cor 1:23).

The Lord may give signs to His people, but focusing on this means of confirmation can easily be confused with magic – seeking to manipulate spiritual powers. Also, if we are not careful, we can fall into the proud pattern of telling the Lord how we want Him to speak to us, when His selected means of communicating with us in any given situation may be far different.

I would encourage you to do the following: 1) Put your problem before the Lord in prayer. 2) Remind the Lord of His promise: James 1:5, in which He says He will give wisdom to those who ask it of Him. However, be prepared that His priorities may be different from your own. For example: you may want His help in some decision; He may be more concerned about a sinful activity you are engaged in. 3) In your normal pattern of Scripture reading expect for Him to give you hints as to what His will for you may be. 4) Listen carefully to the preaching of the Word in your church, as the Lord often speaks to us through messages from His servants. 5) Ask for counsel from Godly friends who have maturity in their walk with the Lord. 6) The whole process of seeing the Lord’s will in a situation should result in your drawing closer to Him, being more sensitive to His Lordship over your life, and open you up to new dimensions of service for Him.

I trust these few thoughts will be helpful to you, John.

Jack
