Questions about: Guidance

Valeria: (04/07/05) Hi Jack I was wondering if you could help me out with something. I've always had a certain love for the missionary field in my heart, ever since I was young. But for about 6 months now, I've had the strongest desire in my heart to one day go to the missionary field. But I am confused as how I am supposed to know if it is God's calling in my life. Can you please tell me how I am supposed to know, or what I am supposed to ask God?

Jack: Thanks, Valeria, for your sensitivity. The whole question of knowing God’s will is a puzzle to many. I would take seriously this “desire” that bubbles up from your heart. Here are some practical suggestions: 1) If you have developed the pattern of reading Scripture and praying each day, ask the Lord to confirm this feeling as really being of Him. You may be surprised at coming across verses which seem to either reinforce or not this sense of call. 2) Begin to read about missions, try to interview missionaries, talk to your pastor, share with your parents, discuss with your closest friends, and record your impressions as they respond to you. Make this project part of your prayers as well. 3) If possible, plan a mission trip to a part of the world that interests you. Do research on it before you go, and evaluate your experience. 4) At the same time, consider other alternatives in terms of future work and ministry. Explore those that interest you. Place them before the Lord as well.

I think you will find that the Lord will begin to communicate with you as you share these thoughts and experiences with Him. Don’t forget: He is more interested than you are at finding His will for your life!

I would also encourage you to look up some of the answers I have given to others who have written me dealing with the subject of guidance. You’ll find it in Urbana.org/next steps/Ask Jack/guidance. Note especially my answer to “Joe.”

May the Lord guide you, Valeria.

Jack
