Questions about: Guidance

sarah: (08/16/05) Hello! I'm a nurse practitioner and the mom of a 14 month-old. My husband and I have been interested in short term mission work with a medical focus. What do you think about taking our little one with us and do you have any suggestions of "family-friendly" missions organizations that could accomodate a toddler? Thanks!

Jack: Dear Sarah:

Taking a toddler on a mission trip undoubtedly would complicate the experience. Who would provide the child care? Probably one of you. Trips of this kind are often in situations where sanitation is less controlled than in our country. Thus hiring a baby-sitter locally could be risky. Normally in experiences like this everyone is tired. Having a small child would only intensify the drain on your strength without the compensation of providing a memorable experience for him or her.

However, the ones who can give you the clearest picture of what you could expect is the organization you elect to go with. The best resource I know of is www.shorttermmissions.com It might be better just to wait a couple years before attempting the "family" experience.

Jack
