| Questions about: Getting involved in missions |
| Carli: (09/13/05)
I need some help. I have two Masters: one in Sociology, one in International Peace Studies. I have experience with youth and social research. Also I have experience organizing volunteers and group of students to serve others. My passion is for the broken and those who are oppressed by social injustice ie. the orphan, the homeless, etc. I am bilingual (English/Spanish). Love different cultures and traveling. I got married almost a year ago and I just can't find my "nitch". I am working as a secretary in a construction company (totally outside my field) which brings a lot of frustration.
Do you know of any ministry or field where I can use all my experience and knowledge for the Kingdom of God? Any ideas? |
| Jack: Carli,
Several ideas come to mind, but much will depend on your geographic location. 1) Translator: Many schools have immigrant children who speak English but their parents don’t have sufficient fluency to deal with issues their children face. My daughter works for the Tucson United School District on a “call” basis, traveling to schools and helping teachers communicate with immigrant parents. She finds it a very fulfilling experience. 2) Inner City Experiences: As more and more immigrants move into the US, they clump together in the cities. Most are poor; many are illegal. Some gravitate to evangelical (Protestant) churches where their pastors and those having lived longer in the US try to help them get jobs, deal with paper work, understand the legal problems, etc. Someone of your background, I would guess, could investigate the realities of the situation near where you live. Often the government has positions for those who have the kind of training you do and are eager to help. It’s a cross-cultural experience! You might check out The Christian Community Development Association – begun by John Perkins working among poor blacks in Mississippi but since then with influence and activities in many places. I understand they even have job listings. 3) Working in US administration with agencies that specialize in ministering to the poor. Here is a list you might look over. Perhaps they have US administrative needs. Servant Partners, Word Made Flesh, Servants to Asia’s Urban Poor, InnerCHANGE. 4) Ask your pastor; pray. If the Lord is stirring your heart, He is well able to guide you into the place He has prepared for you. Talk to your pastor and friends at church, and ask the Lord to bring to your attention opportunities you have never thought about before. Thanks for the question. Only the Lord has the right answer. It will be creative, challenging, and will use all the gifts and training you ever had. Jack Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know. (Jer 33:3) |
