| Nhamo: (09/19/05) i want to go to a bible school in the USA how can i rise money for my fees |
| Jack: I am glad, Nhamo, that you want to study the Bible. Raising money for study as a foreign student is a complicated matter. You have to consider passing the English language proficiency exam. Then the expense of transportation to the U.S., board and room, school fees, adequate clothing (if you study in the North), and expensive incidentals such as health insurance. It’s a formidable undertaking!
But let’s break it down: 1) If you have an idea of the Bible school you would like to attend, it would be good to write them and see if they offer scholarships for students in your situation. 2) If you have foreign friends who think a lot of you and feel that an education in the U.S. is what you need, you could ask them to see if friends or churches they know would be interested in providing financial help for you. 3) You have your own friends that you could share your situation with. Perhaps they would be willing to sponsor you. You need to know that if you come to the U.S. on a student visa, legally you can’t secure employment. However, you may be able to get jobs in the Bible school, such as washing dishes and cleaning rooms. It would be good to ask the school authorities about these options. I think it would be wise to consider what opportunities there are to receive Bible training in your own country. It has lots of advantages: 1) The Bible schools in the U.S. are training students to fit into a North American context, quite different from your own, whereas in a Bible school in your own country all the teaching will be preparing you for the situations you will be facing there. 2) As you study, you will be forming friendships with Christian workers who will be your contemporaries and colleagues the rest of your life. In your practical ministry you will be making contacts and preparing yourself to give leadership among your own people. If you are still convinced that you want to attend a Bible school in the U.S., you might consider “distance learning,” studying courses by means of the Internet. Most U.S. Bible schools have this option. You are able to stay at home, work at your own speed and context, and you won’t have to pay for transportation, room and board, etc. May the Lord lead you to just the precise place He has prepared for you to get the training you need to serve Him in the place He will lead you to.
