Questions about: How can I use my major & skills?

Shinae: (10/20/06) Hi Jack,I'm a jounior, majoring in English Communication in my college. My passion is to work as a missionary in one of Asian countries, or any place that God puts me in. Yet, I don't know how I can apply my major to my vision. I'll look forward your reply. Thanks.

Jack: You probably know, most Asian countries are looking for native speakers to teach English. In fact, some institutions will pay foreigners to teach in schools. Hundreds of Americans have been teaching English in China, for example. Although one can't use the class-room as a a place to preach the Gospel, teaching English affords an individual many opportunities to form friendships which can easily lead to significant conversations.

If you see this as a possibility, I would encourage you to do the following: 1) Along the way, take a course in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. 2) Get involved in a campus Christian group and sharpen up your skills in sharing the Gospel and helping new Christians grow in Christ.

Some websites you may want to explore: 1) ELIC in their Camp China program. This is a Christian agency that takes college kids for summer experiences as well as placing people in longer term positions.(http://www.elic.org/ 2)The best known collection of job sites related to China is at http://www.eslcafe.com/jobs/china/.

Of course at Urbana 06, you will be able to talk to many agencies that are seeking to help Christians English teachers use their training abroad.

May the Lord guide you as you think about these options.

Jack
