Questions about: Guidance

Diana: (10/26/06) Jack- What is wrong with smoking marijuana? Should the fact that it is illegal be enough to stop me from smoking (because I don't trust the government to always know what is best for me). Is it simply because the act alone is selfish? If it is used reasonably and responsibly like drinking, what is the problem? There is evidence that smoking marijuana creates increased mental activity like metacognition and that is what tempts me most. I want to experience this state of meditation. I've struggled with this over and over always having too much pride to break my smoke-free streak. Please help guide me to not smoke for the right reasons.

Jack: I'm not a physician and have never really researched the topic, but just a casual glance on Google brought me to the following article that I would encourage you to read. It describes the negative physiological effects on the human brain of smoking marijuana. http://teens.drugabuse.gov/facts/facts_mj2.asp

Check it out.

As for the benefits, such as "increased mental activity like metacognition," I'd check with a neurologist. My advice would be to stay away from it for health reasons. There are many other ways to grow in the capacity of fruitful meditation without resorting to drugs.
