Questions about: Guidance

Peter: (11/16/06) Hi Jack...I'm about to graduate from college this year with a degree in religion, and I still have no idea what the Lord wants me to do once I graduate. I have been thinking about maybe teaching elementary education, but my heart keeps pulling me back to some sort of christian ministry. I would love to be able to invest in people's lives for Christ, to be able to share the gospel, and maybe also to be able to work with children. But I just don't know what area of ministry I should look at or what particular area to pursue. Do you think that seminary would be a good next step in terms of discovering where the Lord may be calling me in ministry? I just don't want to end up in seminary just for the sake of it, without any purpose....I know that was a long one, and i dont know if it made any sense, but I just had to throw it out there....thanks...

Jack: Peter, I appreciate the tug of your heart. The Lord has made us for Himself and wants all of us to be serving Him in in one capacity or another. Since you like and care for children, I think it would be good to begin teaching elementary education. This would give you an opportunity to get experience in teaching and give you an opportunity to see if this might be an avenue of service.

I would also encourage you to get more involved in your local church. It would be good to chat with your minister, share the same question you did with me, and explore how you could help in the church's ministry. If you especially like teaching, you could volunteer for the Sunday School department or help with the youth.

As you get involved in the different areas of the Church's ministry, you can continually ask the Lord where he would like you to serve, and what especially gives you joy and a sense of fulfillment. I would see Seminary as a source of training once you understand what it is that the Lord wants you to do and if Seminary preparation is the best placae to pepare yourself for it.

You have an exciting life ahead of you. Nothing boring about serving the Lord!

Jack
