Questions about: How can I use my major & skills?

Andrew: (11/18/06) Jack, First off, it is very comforting that you seem to be able to offer hope for those who want to serve, who may not carry classic "missions!"-oriented skill sets (i.e. medicine, ministry degrees, evangelism callings, etc.). Here's a stumper for you, then. My own skills are in the biological sciences, and I am currently working in the government/defense sector. (that's really all I feel comfortable saying, if you get me) In some manner, it is a public health discipline, but not directly. Are there agencies which seek individuals with skills related to scientific research? I am juggling options to go back to school for a medical degree, but is the ability to perform direct patient care the limiting factor for employment by HIV/AIDS agencies? Help! Willing to serve, Andrew

Jack: Thanks, Andrew, for your kind words regarding my answers. You encourage me.

As for participation in HIV/AIDS agencies, I think one obvious answer is to ask them directly! Especially in Africa, where the pandemic is decimating so many countries, but now increasingly in India and even in China, more and more Relief and Development Agencies, as well as even "traditional" mission agencies are working in the field of HIV/AIDS. In fact, at Urbana 06 we have a whole track on this area.

I would encourage you to describe your background, experience, and interest in serving to several large organizations such as World Vision, World Relief, World Concern, and SIM. Several of these have years of experience in hands-on ministry in this important area and can orient you as to where you can most effectively use the valuable resources you have accumulated.

Those "willing to serve" can always find a strategic place!

Jack
