Questions about: How can I use my major & skills?

Melody Conchie: (11/21/06) Hi Jack, I went on an IVCF global project to China and I have a strong desire to serve God as a missionary. I was in nursing school but was not successful and now I am thinking about pursuing social work as I have compassion for people and am gifted in communicating with and comforting them. Is social work a tool that can be used in overseas missions? Melody Conchie

Jack: Melody, I think that theoretical knowledge and practical experience in social work would be a very valuable tool for overseas missions, in that it will give you a deeper understanding of how people relate to one another, cultural influences, and what social scientists have learned about helping people deal with their problems. I think it would be especially helpful in working in urban areas.

I would encourage you to have some solid practical experience, hopefully in a context that includes a spiritual component. In addition to your social work training, I would advise you to take courses in Bible, evangelism, and discipleship. Even the little you learned in nursing school will be of help to you. In other words, we as Christians seek to find an "integral" approach to people's needs. Keep up your China contacts, both through reading and communicating with any English speaking friends you made there.

Blessings on you, Melody.

Jack
