Questions about: Guidance

Ali: (12/14/06) Dear Jack, I'm a 27 year old ESL teacher working in the inner city with refugees/immigrants. I love it and I feel God has called me to serve in the city and in my community. My parents were refugees and my ethnic community is a small one. Not very many people speak the language or know the cultural group. That is why it is very important for me to stay and serve in my city. At the same time, I am also very passionate about missions overseas. Just this summer, I went on a missions trip to China and it was one of the most exhilarating experiences I've ever had. God taught me a lot of things and I grew spiritually in ways I don't think I would have been able to here. I was also able to make connections with the people and share who Jesus was. Being overseas felt so right and I was happy. So my question to you is, can you give me some advise on discerning God's will? Where do I belong? I thought I once knew. Ali

Jack: I think you will have to spend quite a bit of time in the Lord's presence to be able to fully answer your question, Ali. Logically, one could conclude that since you speak the language and know the culture of a small ethnic community, that this would be the place of obvious choice. However, I note that the Lord called His disciples, several of whom were ethnic Galileans, to move into other distant parts of the world (such as Thomas who seems to have ended up in southern India!), a pattern have witnessed among other individuals so gifted today.

Applying this paradigm to your situation, it may be that your dual ethnic background would uniquely prepare you for ministry in China, especially if you decided to use your ESL training, hunkering down to learn the language and make lasting friendships, and setting deep roots into that ancient culture overlaid with contemporary patterns.

One question could be, if you left your ethnic community, are there other leaders present who could continue the work of evangelism and leadership training? China is a vast sea of need, yet has many people working there, both nationals and foreigners.

I would put all these questions before the Lord, writing them in your notebook, and asking the Lord to speak to you as you seek Him each day. Note your reasons for and against each option. Meet with other believers and share your burden with them, asking them to pray with and for you.

As time goes by, I think you will find a pattern emerging. It might include a double option: continuing your roots where you are, but going every year or two back to China to teach English and developing your contacts.

As I have said on many occasions on this web site, God is more eager to lead you and me than we are to follow Him! He often waits for us to seek Him and come to the place where we are willing to do what we know is in His heart for us. These occasions of seeking Him can be precious times in His presence.

Jack

I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plan to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart...." (Jeremiah 29:11).
