| Questions about: Urbana |
| Rachel: (12/17/06) Jack, I only know much info on a few mission organizations. Urbana, with its many mission organizations, is a dream come true (literally, an answer to prayer), but also overwhelming. My next step in pursuing missions seems to be to move forward even though I'm unsure where or with which organization. **With the vastness/broadness of this conference how can I make the most out of this experience, know who to target, connect with recruiters, and go away from Urbana with avenues to pursue?** I've read many of your responses to people's questions and see that often your answer has to be quite broad because no info on the person is offered. In an attempt to make the above question a little easier to answer, I'll quickly run thru where I'm at--I am 28 and graduated with a BA in Linguistics in 2003. I currently work full-time (in an unrelated field) to pay off student loans and am involved in ministry in my church, co-leading a small group of 20's and am part of a women's Bible Study (which has given me a growing interest in women's ministries as well). I've spent the last year in intensive personal growth--growing in my walk with the Lord, learning to live by the Spirit, being mentored by my pastor's wife, and at a mission organization's suggestion have sought professional Christian counseling (including deep healing prayer). I'll be interested to read your response to my question, and thank
you for offering this way for us to get advice. Gratefully, Rachel |
| Jack: Thanks, Rachel, for your question and for sharing personal information about yourself. It appears that the Lord is doing good things in your life: you are growing spiritually, gaining experience in practical ministry, and receiving deep healing – all excellent aspects of preparation for ministry anywhere. (This answer will go to you alone. I won’t be posting it.)
However, you leave many other questions unanswered: - As I to assume that you feel called to missions? - Why did you study linguistics? Are you interested in Bible translation? - Has God placed a special geographical area on your heart? - Would you like to work with women? If you are wide open, I would suggest the following: - Ask for the Lord to prepare you during these last days before the Convention. - Enjoy to the full all the different aspects of the program. - As you look over the seminars, ask the Lord to guide you. Which are the ones that seem most interesting to you? - As you hear the speakers, interact with others, and participate in the Bible Studies, keep a flowing journal of what you are learning, your questions, and your personal thoughts. - The exhibition hall can be quite dazzling! However, go take a look. Ask the Lord to guide you. Circulate around, taking it all in. Pick up interesting literature, chat with representatives, and get a feel of what you are observing. If you are already interested in a geographical location, let this guide you in your selection. If a kind of ministry interests you, scope it out. I think that by the end of the week you will have some specific clues to work through, some significant people you may want to follow up on, some literature you’ll want to read. I’d love it if you would let me know how you make out! God is more interested in teaching and guiding you than you are interested in finding His will! Blessings on you, Rachel. Jack |
