Mark, I believe that God's call is first of all to Himself.

Jesus said to the disciples (Mark 1:17), "Follow Me." Only then, did He add, "I will make you to become fishers of men."

When we have responded with an open heart and full obedience of commitment to Him, from this relationship He then can show us how He wants us to serve Him, whether it be in what we call "full time ministry" or in "secular life."

He can also point us to a geographic location and even a specific people group. However, all these details may change, but the relationship with Him stays the same.

Let me give you a personal illustration. God called me to serve him quite early in my life. While in college, He pointed me to the professional ministry, which led me to study in a Seminary. Meanwhile, He put Latin America on my heart, but I was encouraged to have experience in my own language first.

As the founding pastor of a congregation, I learned how to share the Gospel, lead people in worship, and teach the Bible. While doing this, He put university students on my heart. Thus when we went to Latin America, my wife and I raised up a university student ministry in Colombia.

After twenty years, we felt led to leave this focus and teach in a theological seminary, which we continue to do. However, 6 years ago, InterVarsity asked us to help with the Urbana Conventions.

Now my ministry is writing on the Urbana website, as you can see, though we continue to teach in the Seminary in Colombia each year, and give witness where we are. Many different fields, but my commitment to the Lord remains the same, and I am ready for whatever He may bring into my life.
