Questions about: Urbana

Will: (02/28/06) Someone told me recently that the Urbana organization is based on a post-millenial view that: (1) the world will get better and better and then Christ will return, and (2) that we as believers and missionaries are actually affecting the timetable of the return of Christ. I have been to two Urbana conventions and read (not all but) a lot of what has been sent to me from Urbana.org, but I have not seen anything that jumped out at me with these views. Perhaps I missed it because I just wasn't looking for it. Please tell me if the Urbana organization holds a particular position on these issues. Thank you. Will B.

Jack: Will, the Urbana Student Missions Convention is sponsored by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.

As you will note in InterVarsity's doctrinal statement (http://www.intervarsity.org/aboutus/doctrine.php) ("The victorious reign and future personal return of Jesus Christ, who will judge all people with justice and mercy, giving over the unrepentant to eternal condemnation but receiving the redeemed into eternal life.") there is no attempt to define a position on the millenium.

Since a broad range of speakers and seminar leaders participate in each convention, it is possible that some may have expressed their own eschatological views which though possibly more specific than InterVarsity's doctrinal statement, do not contradict it.

If you would like to dialogue more on this issue, please write me personally.

Jack
