| Mark: (04/25/06) Jack,
My wife and I are planning a summer mission trip and are raising funds through our friends and church. I'm wondering if I should tithe the money that comes in for my mission trip. Thanks in advance,
Mark |
| Jack: Good question, Mark. God delights in cheerful givers. If He has laid this on your heart, I would encourage you to go for it, not as fulfilling a “law,” but as a desire to show your gratitude to the Lord for this opportunity He has given you to serve Him. As you go on your mission trip, ask Him to show you a special need where you’ll be serving where you could invest your “tithe.” It will be a source of great joy as you celebrate the Lord’s faithfulness in giving you what you needed for the trip.
The only problem I see is that if those who contribute to your trip are given receipts which they can use for the IRS declaration, you may have to ask the entity or church who is handling the funds how you can give part of this as a charitable donation in a foreign context. On the other hand, you can just give this “tithe” out of your own pocket and not worry about receipts. Remember Corrie Ten Boom’s words: “I give and God gives back to me, but His shovel is always larger than mine!” Jack If you give, you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over. Whatever measure you use in giving--large or small--it will be used to measure what is given back to you (Luke 6:38). |
