Questions about: Money and Missions

svetlana: (08/07/06) what is 100% support raising? does this mean compensation for the position and if so,how does it work? thanks! Svetlana

Jack: Svetlana, I don't know where you got this term. My understanding would be that an entity that you might be interested in joining would require you to raise 100% of your support. In other words, they wouldn't plan to pay you anything from their own sources. This is very common in evangelical mission agencies today.

"It works" in that an individual who has a desire to serve in some ministry makes application to an agency. The agency reviews the individuals' credentials, their sense of call, etc., and then if they accept the individual, it is on the final basis that he or she raises the amount of support the entity requires for the position the individual is applying for. These funds may come from individuals, churches, or other institutions. The funds are usually sent to the agency directly, which sends a tax deductible receipt to the donors, usually takes a percentage (often about 13%) for administrative costs, and then sends a periodic check to the individual.

I trust I understand you question and that my answer is helpful to you.

Jack
