Questions about: Guidance

David: (09/08/06) Question about guidance: Dear Jack, I've been praying all summer about going to Urbana '06. I've registered a while back, but I never felt peace after sending my registration concerning that decision. I am wondering if there may be a reason why God would not want me there, but I can only think of good reasons to go. I know Urbana will be an excellent opportunity to get into ministries; however, I want to do His will. Is there a method you could suggest to help reveal to me God's will in this? God bless. -David

Jack: David, I am glad that you have a tender conscience and want to do God's will. The Lord gave us a mind to use, and as you have thought about whether you should go or not, you "can only think of good reasons to go."

Now you don't feel peace. I think in moments like this I would suggest the following: 1) In a quiet place, preferably at the start of a day when your mind is clear, ask the Lord to show you why you don't have peace about going. It would be good to repeat the question as you read Scripture in your daily quiet time with Him. I like the passage in 1 John 3:20 that says "whenever our hearts condemn us...God is greater than our hearts, and He knows everything." 2) It would also be good to talk to some mature Christians about your lack of peace, like your pastor, youth leader, or staff worker especially if they know you personally. It's helpful to exteriorize our feelings. Sometimes people just feel lack of peace whenever they make a decision! 3) If nothing comes up, thank the Lord, and then go to Urbana expecting a blessing. Sometimes we can dwell too much on our feelings, though we always need to be sensitive to our conscience.

May the Lord show you His way.

Jack
