Questions about: Guidance

Laura: (01/18/07) Hello Jack! I am struggling right now with deciding what to do after college. I have had a desire to teach overseas for some time and in the past four months I have felt drawn to Kurdistan. Yet, my mom believes I should do something in the writing field; like become an editor or a journalist. I don't feel passionate about writing, but I do about teaching, especially in Kurdistan. It seems that the answer is obvious, do what you are passionate about. But I find myself questioning myself over and over and I don't know if I keep questioning because I'm afraid to go with what I believe I am being called to do, or becauase I'm not really called to it. Do you have any insights in the matter? Thank you for your time!

Jack: Why Kurdistan, Laura? Did you visit there on a mission trip? Why teaching? What teaching have you done? Why is your Mom encouraging you to write or be an editor? What have you written? What will be the basis of your decision? I don't find you mentioning God in all of this or what He might be calling you to be and do?

I think one's passions can be a way the Lord wants to lead us. He made us for a purpose and gave us the talents and internal responses for what He made us to do, but it is important to be putting all these matters before Him in prayer. As we read Scripture He also shows us both our own heart and His as well.

I would encourage you to explore the possibility of teaching in Kurdistan. It will take you quite some time to get ready, including further study and practical experience. If you haven't had a short term mission experiece there, it would be good to do so. I don't want to guess your mother's motives, but she may not be anxious for you to leave to such a distant, and potentially dangerous, place and undoubtedly is concerned for your safety. This is an issue you will need to talk through with her.

It would not be a waste of time to do some writing and/or editing. A missionary can always use these skills, even if you are not passionate about them.

Continue to seek the Lord. Walk closely beside Him. He will show you His will for you in due time.

Jack

Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God, my Savior, and my hope is in you all the day long. (Ps 25)
