melvin ardon: (10/24/07)

Can we look at Jesus as the first missionary to earth, the perfect missionary?

And if so what was the drive of this missionary, was it to honor his father, his calling, or to fulfill his calling?

What was Jesus the missionary's drive?

Jack:

I would agree with you, Melvin, that Jesus was the perfect missionary. I wouldn't say He was the first.

In Exodus 19 we see God commissioning Israel to be His "missionary" to the pagan nations, and certainly Jonah should be considered a "sent one," a "missionary."

As for Jesus' "drive," I would say that John 6:18ff helps us discern something of this:

I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of Him who sent me. And this is the will of Him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that He has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him whall have eternal life, andI will raise him up at the last day.

To this passage I would add John 17:4, in which Jesus prays to His Father:

"I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do." In His prayer, He elaborates on what He accomplished as He sought to do His Father's will.

Jesus' drive, then, His very passion, was to glorify His Father by completing the task the Father had given to Him.

And this should be our consuming passion, as well.

Jack
