Questions about: Money and Missions

marty: (10/04/07) Should the church give at least 10% of its income back to missions? We currently give 6% of our general offering to missions. Thanks for your input. Marty

Jack: Every church is different in its sense of priorities and outlook on this matter, Marty. I am glad that you are concerned about your investment in missions. The Scripture talks about a tithe in the O.T. plus offerings which ended up expecting the average citizen of Israel to give up to a third of his salary for the Temple, the Levites, etc. In the N.T., Paul encourages us to give "as the Lord has blessed us."

However, these are admonitions for individuals. Paul does talk about Gentile churches giving an offering for the needy in Jerusalem, but gives no figures or percentages. He celebrates the Philippians' contribution to his own needs, but once again, no attempt at statistics.

I have known churches which sought to give half their income to missions, but this was an individual decision.

It's a matter for the people and official church board of the congregation to decide on this matter. What is clear is that "the Lord loves a cheerful giver."
