Questions about: Getting involved in missions

Glen: (12/11/07)

For students studying abroad what are the best ways for them to connect with IFES groups on the campuses they'll be studying?

Also, what would be the best resources to help them prepare for living (and hopefully ministering) in a cross-cultural environment?

Glen

Jack: IFES: Glen, for the first question, look up http://www.ifesworld.org/home/index.php where you will find a world map plus a side bar which can lead you to any of the IFES groups and how to contact them.

Resources: Several come to mind.

1) Getting to know foreign students studying in the U.S. who come from the culture the individuals will be entering.

I would encourage the establishment of relationships to a level where the non-American feels free to express his or her true thoughts and feelings about their country, the U.S., the differences he or she has encountered, the aspect of politics, thoughts about religion, etc.

2) IVP has published A Beginner's Guide to Crossing Cultures. Making Friends in a multicultural World, by Patty Lane, which may be helpful.

Books on anthropology, history of the region, and history of the Church's experience there in its contact with the local culture would be enlightening.

3) Operation World gives a synopsis of factual data on any country of the world.

4) You might like to contact personnel in Link. They are in contact with many IFES groups and Americans who are working with them, and is constantly preparing individuals to work abroad.

May the Lord guide and bless you as you explore this fascinating opportunity.

In His Fellowship,

Jack
