| janel: (02/21/07) Hi Jack,
God has led me to a missions organization, which I have been asked to join as a full time missionary.
I have been out of college for nearly 10 years. I started graduate school, so I have student loan debt, as well as auto debt.
What suggestions/advice would you have for me- a young working professional transitioning from salary to support raising? How to systematic and practically work through the process of going on the mission field full time(i.e., finances, 401Ks, medical, support raising???
Feel free to contact me directly, I realize this is a lengthy question to answer in your column. |
| Jack: Janel, I would encourage you to read my answer to Sarah (www.urbana.org / Ask Jack / money and missions).
As for 401Ks and medical arrangements, I would encourage you to discuss this matter with the mission organization with which you are planning to serve. I'm sure they have a policy on the matter of medical insurance, or at least suggestions. You might also want to talk with a financial advisor, explaining your situation. I'm sure that he or she will have helpful questions you need to work through. As for material on support raising, I'm sure you will find help in the material that Bill Dillon has prepared: 1) His website: http://www.peopleraising.com/ask.cfm 2) His book: William P. Dillon. People Raising. A Practical Guide to Raising Support. Chicago: Moody Press, 1993. The Lord who called you is fully able to provide for your needs. This fact will encourage you in your seeking Him and His will for the questions you pose. This is a precious time to draw near to Him and discover new dimensions of His faithfulness. Jack |
