Jack: Thank you, Meg, for sharing your heart so openly with me. I wish I knew more about your situation so that my answer could be more specific. Also, I wish you had sent me your e-mail address so that I could write you personally. However, within these limitations I share the following:

1) Depression has many causes. It might be helpful for you to visit a doctor to see if there are physical bases for your discouragement and depression.

2) As I review the description of your situation, I think it would also be helpful if you could visit a counselor, especially if you can find a Christian one, who can give you some objectivity in facing the issues you mention, and perhaps help you find some of the causes. If your minister is sensitive to these things he may also be a helpful resource.

3) I would also urge you to spend time in the Lord’s presence. It is helpful to remember that other Christians have had their struggles. Let me quote you some verses from Psalm 27: Listen to my pleading, O Lord. Be merciful and answer me! My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.” And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.” Do not hide yourself from me. Do not reject your servant in anger. You have always been my helper. Don’t leave me now; don’t abandon me, O God of my salvation. Even if my father and mother abandon me, The Lord will hold me close. Teach me how to live, O Lord. Lead me along the path of honesty, For my enemies are waiting for me to fall. I am confident that I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living. Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.

The Lord loves you, Meg, and will help you as you bring all these details before Him. Read these verses over each day. Also, Psalm 23. It would be good for you to memorize this Psalm if you haven’t already.

Next time you write my column, please include your e-mail address.

Jack
