Questions about: Money and Missions

Meagan: (05/18/07) How much money to missionaries make in a year?

Jack: Many variables on this question, Meagan. - A lot depends on where one is working. Being a missionary in Japan, for instance, is probably quite a bit more expensive than the cost of living in the U.S. Whereas in some Third World countries the cost of living is very low. - It depends on what the policy of the agency you go with. Some have much more generous salary levels than others. - Some agencies allow their missionaries to decide at what level they would like to receive their salary. - There is also the matter of travel to and from the field. Some agencies allow their missionaries to have "work funds" with which they purchase needed equipment. Some agencies allow their missionaries to raise additional funds for private schooling, a significant problem in certain areas. These details need to be considered.

Don't forget that whereas some denominational mission agencies provide a salary for their missionaries, most agencies require that candidates for missionary service raise their own support from churches and friends for all their needs. Then most agencies skim off 10% to 15% for mission "overhead." (It's very difficult to raise money for office personnel, such as secretaries and accountants.)

The best thing to do is to contact an agency you are thinking of working with and ask them.
