| Questions about: Money and Missions |
| Iris: (07/16/07) Hi, Jack!
This is my second time asking you question and I thank your serving heart so people like can turn to a right person to ask question! I'm also thankful that I can use internet for good purpose!
Here is my story. I committed this whole year, 2007 to God as a missionary in the Philippines. But I had came back due to illness. I went there in January and I just came back to the States. I have not be able to talk to my friends in general. The decision was made in very short time and it was unexpected.
I have few people who committed to support me financially for whole year. I do not know how am I supposed to tell them? This is God's money and their committment to Him. My first thought is tell them to stop support me right away but I'm not 100% sure if this is the right thing to say. I intend to not go back soon and will have to find a job to live.
And I also have two people who wants to start supporting financially. It is irony that they want to do it now after I came back.
First thing I want to do is tell them what happened and show appreciation and ask them to stop.
I want to hear your opinion.
Thank you and GOD bless you and your family! |
| Jack: Thanks, Iris, for your kind words and desire for God to bless my family. He is blessing, for which I am grateful. I’m sorry that you had to write me twice, but this is the first time I have received your question.
I am sorry that you had to cut your time short in the Philippines due to illness. Since you are now back in the U.S. and are not actively involved in some mission enterprise, it is right that you inform your supporters what happened, express your appreciation to them, and request that they stop supporting you – unless you continue on in some ministry and have an organization that supervises you that can issue receipts recognized by the government. If people just want to send you money as a personal gift for some reason, of course, they are free to do so, but you need to be clear in your communication. I think it would be O.K. to accept a one month “relocation” expense, especially in the light of your illness and the unexpectedness of your return. Thanks for asking, and I trust you are recovering.
