Questions about: Apologetics and Theology

Shaun: (07/26/07) hi jack, with the noah's ark story, god decided to flood the world and kill everyone but noah and his family and the animals. What gave god the right to decide that everyone else had to die? and even though he made a promise to not do it again, how can we be certain he will never do it again? because its not like any human would have the authority to tell god not to do something and in this day and age we have reached new heights in evil and it is easy too lose your self in the pleasures of todays societys which are considered a sin. So What if he changes his mind? Shaun

Jack: Congratulations, Shaun, for doing your own thinking. You ask two questions:

1) What gave God the right to decide that everyone else had to die? Take a look at Isaiah 45. I think you need a bigger concept of God. He is the Creator of all things. He can do what He pleases! We are blessed that He is a God of justice, righteousness, and love, and not capricious like the gods of the heathen.

2) How can we be certain that He will keep His word? In Hebrews 6:18 the author categorically states that it is impossible for God to lie. Balaam, apparently speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (Numbers 23:19) God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?

One of the basic purposes of the whole recounting of God’s dealing with Abraham is to show that God is worthy of trust. This is part of what it means to have faith – believing that God is both able to keep His promise and will do so. It is part of His very character and nature. Upon His character we stake our hope of salvation. The longer we know Him, the more we come to appreciate how very trustworthy He is.
