Questions about: Getting involved in missions

Kathryn: (11/12/08) I have several question's actually. This is for an Awana Discovery. Where Do you work? What is your job? What is being a Missionary like? Do you enjoy your job?

Jack: Kathryn, I work in Miami as the president of the Latin America Mission (note my bio on the www.urbana.org website under "Ask Jack".

However, I used to work in Colombia, South America, for over 30 years. I had two jobs: 1) My wife and I raised up a ministry to university students, for 20 years. 2) We then taught in a theological seminary for 10 years (and still go back each year).

Being a missionary is like doing similar things in the U.S. except we have to relate to people of a different cultural context and learn a different language. But there are many, many different kinds of missionaries, from those who work with primitive people in underdeveloped areas to sophisticated elites who work in high rise office buildings.

I love my job. I think it is the most interesting thing I could ever think of doing. It's also difficult, and I have to depend on the Lord each day.

Jack
