| Questions about: Getting involved in missions |
| Mark: (12/22/08) I am a college freshman, and I am majoring in a field, known as Director of Christian Education (basically the Lutheran's equivalent to youth ministry). It has different specialization areas, and the one I am specializing in is cross-cultural ministry. I really want to do a support role for a mission agenc with that degree. Do you have any suggestions on what I could do with a degree as a DCE?

| Jack: To fully answer your question, Mark, I would need to see a list of the courses you will be taking. Also, I’d like to know what you have in mind when you mention “a support role for a mission agency.” In addition, if you have some on-the-field experience, you will be more valuable to the home office of the agency. However, just guessing, plus noting that you’ll be specializing in cross-cultural ministry, I’ll give you some ideas.
It seems to me that your training would help you fit into the Personnel Department of an agency. It is usually this department that recruits, screen, orients, trains, deploys, and then supervises the missionaries. I would encourage you early on to make contact with agencies you might enjoy working with. Share with them your interest and the courses you will be taking. Knowing their needs and seeing your potential, they will be able to guide you not only in selecting the electives you will be able to choose, but also in the topics you research and write papers on. I’m sure they will also see the value of field experience, and will help you tailor your involvement in such a way that you gain he most preparation for service in the home office. Jack |
