Questions about: Apologetics and Theology

Brent: (02/01/08) Could Jesus have sinned? Not that he would have but did he have the actual capability to sin? Thanks Jack!

Jack: A complicated theological question, Brent, because of the mysterious relationship of the human and divine, in His being truly God and truly man. James tells us that God doesn't lie and isn't tempted by sin. But the Gospel writers give us sharp details of Jesus facing three fundamental, crucial temptations, which would have no sense if He couldn't have sinned. The writer of the Hebrews says He was in all ways tempted as we are - yet without sinning. The same observation would hold true in this passage as well.

What we see in Him, however, is a total dependence on and obedience to His Father's will and a deep understanding of what temptation is all about, so that He is able to help us in our own temptations.

Thus, I conclude that, yes, Jesus could have sinned. I'm so glad that He didn't!
