| Past. Raymond Matabiele: (03/05/08) Hello Jack. I am pastoring three small churches in South Africa. One in a farming area, one in a rural area and one in small town.Unemployment rate at 80%, but the people need and want christ. I came from a relitively strong congregation before moving into fulltime ministry. My Question, I am working a fultime Job in a manufacturing environment. I find it difficult to minister effectively to these people, not a lot of people are willing to help either. I want to resign at work, but i have a family to support and the churhes are not in a position to support us financialy. Do i just resign and trust God for finance. I have ask some friends and churhes to support the ministry but with little success. Must i follow my heart, becauseat the moment i am really not enjoying working and after work i have to go and minister and still have family to support .My heart is in the ministry. Right now i am working night shift from 21h00 to 09h00 tomorrow (12hours shift) than i will go to my churhce office and do some work and phone calls. At 12h00 i will go to bed and woke up 17h00 to spend time with the family, because 19h00 i must prepare for work. Than theres the normal appointments Marraige counselling, marrying people etc. What can i do to improve? |
| Jack: Your schedule is exhausting just reading about it, dear brother! It's a wonder that you are not ill.
With 80% unemployment rate, there must be a lot of people in your congregations with nothing to do. It would seem to me that one avenue of help would be to disciple and train a small group of the ablest and most dedicated members of the three congregations and then begin to involve them in the ministry. At first it will take more of your time, but as they grow in experience and ask the Lord for spiritual gifts, they will be able to help you in time. Some might encourage you to just "step out on faith," quit your job, and dedicate full-time to the ministry. If the Lord distinctly tells you to do this, it's one thing. But if not, you will have serious economic problems. There are many places in the world where leaders are unable to support themselves in ministry due to economic problems, and have to support themselves with secular jobs. With the unemployment rate as high as you are facing, yours may be such a situation. However, if the churches grow in numbers and the leaders begin to find their own ministry, you may find that the offerings increase enough for you to live on what they give you. Does your church belong to another denomination that may have churches with more income in a large city or in more prosperous areas? They might be willing to see you as their "missionary," as you work in this depressed area. Obviously I have no easy answers, Raymond. May the Lord provide for you "a table in the wilderness," resources from an unexpected source. I admire your dedication. God is able. Jack |
