| David: (04/18/08) Hey Jack!
Thank you for all the wisdom you share and your excellent answers to some tough questions! This question is something I was asked by a fellow Christian who is undergoing tough times in her faith, but I was completely stumped and the question has been irking me ever since.
She asked me: "Why did God create us if He knew we were going to fall?" The questions "Why did God create Satan?" and my personal toughie "Why did God create a tree from which we could not eat its fruit?" also arose in the subject.
Do you think you could help us out of this one?

| Jack: Thanks, David, for the tough questions. As I read them over and think about them, I recognize that theologians smarter and more prepared than I am have attempted answers to these and others equally difficult. However, I have learned that unless God reveals something about Himself, it is rather precarious and even dangerous to try and figure out why He has or has not done something. No one knows the answer, David, and quite frankly if the Lord didn't reveal it to us, it's undoubtedly not important for us to know!
There is a very interesting verse I keep in mind when I think about issues like the ones you raise: Deuteronomy 29:29: "The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law." What this verse basically says is the God doesn't tell us everything we might like to know. For some reason or other, He hides the meaning from us. But He does give us what is important, and these things we need to listen to and obey. I trust you won't think I am dodging the questions. But this is what I believe and understand. Jack |
