| Questions about: Getting involved in missions |
| Emily: (04/05/08) Jack...I am a Freshman at a small secular university in Louisiana. I have been called to missions for a while but I've recently returned from Guatemala with our BCM and I think God is calling me to full-time international missions work...mainly working with children. I am currently majoring in physical therapy but I feel that isn't where God wants to use me. I am minoring in Spanish and that is right but do you have any ideas for a major that I may be able to pursue that can be used on the mission feild. |
| Jack:
Emily, since you seem to be interested in children, I would encourage you to consider the major of education. This would prepare you to help educate Sunday School teachers, guide young people in organizating Bible studies, and later on with experience, even help pastors do a better job of communication. If you became interested in helping street children, a background in edication would be very helpful.
Many Latin America countries are concerned with the lack of teaching skills in a culture that has traditionally emphasized rote learning. Having a degree in education would prepare you in many ways to make a contribution. You would also want to take courses in Bible and Theology. A course in cultural Anthropology would also be very helpful.
Minoring in Spanish is also helpful, though the best language training is probably in a language school in Latin America where one can be immersed in the culture. I would also encourage you to participate in Spearhead (see www.spearhead.org), a program for high school graduates that gives you two months of immersion in Mexican culture. Knowing some Spanish would make this experience all the more valuable. Jack |
