Questions about: Getting involved in missions

Jack: (07/12/08) Jack, I am pursuing my masters degree in building science/construction management from auburn university and will be finishing up in Aug. of 09. Upon completion, I will need to work awhile to pay back some student loans before I can pursue mission work overseas, but I want to begin the research process now of possible agencies that would allow me to use this skill/education in construction for the glory of God. Could you direct me in some direction. Thanks!

Jack: Jack, I would encourage you to contact some of the large relief and development agencies like World Vision, World Relief, or Food for the Hungry. Just as the title suggests, they are involved both in bringing relief to areas of disaster as well as helping in areas that need development. Both, in one way or another, involve construction. The fact that you bring more than just skill with a hammer would seem to be that you would be valuable to them. They are always needing managers and administrators, and one who knows building science construction from the ground up, as it were, would make you all the more valuable.

Give them a try and see what they recommend.

At the same time, I would encourage you to keep your eyes and ears open when you hear missionaries speak or when you pick up a mission magazine. There are many Christian camps around the world that are constantly needing maintenance as well as the planning and construction of new buildings. Much of this work would involve the training of nationals in the skills you possess which would involve you eventually in language learning.

You might take a look at the following two search engines: 1) Right Now http://www.rightnow.org/worldConnection.aspx 2) Mission finder: http://www.missionfinder.org/

May the Lord help you find the right fit.

Jack
