| Questions about: Getting involved in missions |
| Sarah: (07/16/08) Hey Jack,
I went to Urbana in 2000, and supported a friend to go in 2003. I never really thought about missions, but I married a wonderful Christian man ~ who cannot live in the U.S. Do you have any advice for international missions for couples with no misitry training or experience? We are desperate to be together, and are considering any options that wouldn't take a lengthy visa process. Thank you, Sarah & Isaac Alfaro |
| Jack: Thanks, Sarah. Congratulations on your marriage!
I think I understand your plight - and certainly understand your desperation to be together. However, I don't think that this motivation indicates a basis for international missions. We talk about "calling" as a legitimate motivation for missionary service, that someone has become convinced that God is directing him or her to serve Him in some kind of ministry in a cross-cultural context. I think in your situation that this "call" might come later. It would seem to me that since you are eager to be together (not a surprise since you married each other!) that you live in Isaac's country, develop your marriage, and as Christians look for opportunities to serve Him much as you would do if you lived in the U.S. As time goes on and you find that your ministry begins to absorb more and more of your interest and time, I think you might consider whether the Lord is calling you to serve Him in in full time ministry as "international missionaries."
