Questions about: Money and Missions

Fletcher: (09/22/08) do you notice any difference in single missionaries verse married couples in how they raise support? is it easier for them, more difficult, and how would you rec omened that they keep in touch with their support base? Thanks Fletcher

Jack: Yes, Fletcher, quite a difference – one has to raise a lot less, especially when the kids come! Somehow married life gets more complicated!

But as for “how” it is done – no. Raising support is really “people raising,” drawing individuals to share your vision and become your partner.

As for keeping in touch: - At first, write a thank you note for every donation. - As the pattern develops, try to get people on a distribution list and send an e-mail once a month. Not more than a page. Try to include a photo, but learn how to reduce it so that your e-mails aren’t 3 megabites! - If people write back, answer immediately. - Share little anecdotes of your experiences. Just one story each time. Keep them brief. People are busy. Don’t preach, but include a verse that may have spoken to you and tell why. - Get close friends to evaluate your communication – what do they like; what do they find boring? - Carry a small digital camera with you all the time hidden away, but then be ready for those special moments. Close up photos are better than large groups. Each photo should project a story, if possible. People also want to see YOU, so don’t just send photos of others. - Pray for your supporters and ask them to pray for you – and especially for important events coming up – and then tell them what happened.

Well, that’s a start!

Jack
