Questions about: How can I use my major & skills?

sarah: (01/08/09) Dear Jack, I served for 3 years on the mission feild working with Muslims, but felt - surprisingly - God calling me back to the States. I see the influence the USA has on the world and global church and cry for how much the American church has weakened and tarnished. So, I want to serve in ministry in the US. Great. What kind of ministry?? As a woman, I'm not going to automatically go into the pastorate. How do I explore what different roles exist? There are secular tests that you can take to determine what kind of career is best for you - is there such a thing for ministry? Thank you!! Sarah

Jack: Sarah, I sent your query to a friend of mine who does professional testing. Here is her answer:

1) She could take one of the different kinds of DISC tests that exist: these tests help determine a person’s “work style” and there are formats of the test that are designed to help determine a person’s “spiritual gifts.” The DISC, and it’s different ramifications, are available on-line. She can explore them herself. 2) She could take the “secular” Strong’s Vocational Inventory and extrapolate from the results to a particular kind of service or ministry. This test is excellent and exceedingly helpful. However, it is computer scored and I would imagine she would have to go to a career counselor or Guidance Counseling Office to be able to take it. 3) And that is her best option, really, to go to a Christian college, or to a secular university near her (perhaps she is currently a student?) and ask for the career guidance office. (I used to work in one of these, at the Univ. of CA at Santa Barbara.) There are people specialized in helping other people answer just the kinds of questions she is asking. If she is in a secular university, or goes to, a secular career counseling office, the results of tests and the content of the guidance will need to be adjusted, by her, and perhaps a Christian counselor, to her sense of calling for ministry. In a Christian college or grad school, some adjustment may still be necessary, but probably easier to do.

I trust these suggestions will be helpful to you, Sarah.

Jack
