| Kelsey: (02/02/09) Hi Jack,
My good friend is Jewish. I was wondering if it was okay to go with her to services. She is very involved in her synogogue, and asks me to come with her regularly. It feels awkward to refuse. But the beliefs of modern Reformed and Reconstructionist Jews are so different than even traditional Judaism--many go to services and yet don't even believe in a god, or believe in a mother goddess. What do I do about her invitation, and other invitation from non-Christian friends?
Thanks! |
| Jack: Kelsey, I would thank your friend for her kind invitation. I would attend once or twice, evaluate your experience, and then share with her what you appreciated and what contrasts you saw with your own convictions. It seems that by going you show your appreciation of her kind invitation, and the experience should give you ample opportunity to give a witness to your own experience of Jesus.
I would encourage you to pray before you go that the Lord would project you and give you wisdom and insight. Also, while you are in the service, be careful of your own participation. You are going not as a participant but only as an observer. I suggest you do not give the impression that you will go regularly. Regular participation is for those who are believers in what is being presented. A Jewish service (modern Reformed or even Orthodox) does not exalt Jesus. You are to worship only Him. If there is a Messianic Jewish synagogue in your area (where Jews who accept Jesus as the Messiah gather to worship him through their cultural forms) I would encourage you to invite her to accompany you there. May the Lord use these experiences to lead your friend to come to know Jesus. Jack |
